All Net

Fishnet. It’s an inherently tawdry article of clothing, is it not? That being said, I interpret it more from a visual standpoint; the perfect criss-crossing of black lines across bare legs. I also like that we are re-appropriating the idea of the type of woman who would wear this, by making this an every day thing. Taking the subversive and spinning it. I think a lot of us (even myself) are asking what is the purpose of fashion right now? Why am I blogging when the world literally has been turned upside down?

Well, in my quiet ruminations, I’ve realized that fashion has always¬†been a means (and some times the only vehicle) for women to rebel, to shout by way of how we choose to cloth our bodies. It’s a form of expression, a quiet protestation that is just as powerful. In a recent podcast I listened to, Mary Tyler Moore (RIP) described how she fought earlier in her career to wear pants (instead of a skirt and apron) on the Dick Van Dyke show. ‘No one vacuums in a dress at home!’ she quipped. So, it’s true, clothes can be a vehicle for change.
