One of the reasons I still love working in fashion is the opportunity to work with smaller designers – it’s where I reap the most joy. When you design for yourself and yourself only, there’s a a greater sense of freedom. And in my opinion, can be seen and felt in the clothing. It’s a hard business to be in – fashion – I often have very heart-felt conversations with friends who just want to create without having to think of SKU’s, RPMs, and the oodles of other business-y aspects of the job. But alas, isn’t the entire human existence just like this? We are complex, dual beings – something I’ve been trying to grapple with as I turn more inwards into self-exploration via work, meditation and yes even fashion.

I discovered Dr. Tererai Trent on a podcast recently. After listening to her riveting story of overcoming child marriage, poverty, & illiteracy in rural Zimbabwe, I became ignited, moved to instantly buy her book, The Awakened Woman. In the part memoir, part workshop, Dr. Trent guides the reader into how she too can become awakened.
