IMMA HUSTLA BABY
I’m a hustler baby
I just want you to know
It aint where I been
But where I’m bout to go
Now I just wanna love you
But be who I am
And with all this cash
You’ll forget your man
Now give it to me
Gimme that funk, that sweet, that nasty, that gushi stuff
But don’t bullshit me
C’mon, gimme that funk, that sweet, that nasty, that gushi stuff
Truth be told, I’m a huge fan of 90′s hip hop/rap. I think something early on that really drew me spiralling towards this genre of music (other than the ridiculous lyrical genius of Biggy, Dre, Jay etc) was the culture. The sideways caps, the letterman jackets, the bling, all of it just kinda sucked me in. Rap culture is a culture of excess. Big cars, beautiful women, krys-tal flowing out the wazoo, who wouldn’t want that life style??
So when I saw this NIKE jacket in Tokio Joe (not to be confused with Tokio 7) in New York I couldn’t help but give it a try. It fit perfectly and turned out to be only a sample jacket–so never worn! BONUS. It reminded me of my hip-hop heroes–now to find a sideways cap :p I really like the androgyny that this jacket gives me. In fact, I like mixing anything that is super opposite because I think it gives an outfit depth and a story. And the bestest part? It’s practical!!!!! Leather sleeves and wool center. Winter do your worst.
Oh and in case you guys haven’t heard of Tokio 7 (I didn’t hear about til I was about to go to NY), it’s a famous conignment store in the East Village that has a very impressive (albeit small) collection of used designer duds. Some of them included: Christian Dior, Chanel, Yohji Yamamoto, Issey Miyake, Prada, Marni, Louis Vuitton, Marc Jacobs, Proenza Schouler, Zac Posen…the list goes on. The best piece I saw in there must have been this silver sequined Chanel blazer from a few seasons ago. Its price tag was $900 dollars which isn’t too bad considering it must have been well over $2k back in the day. Tokio Joes which is also in the East Village is very similar to Tokio 7; does anyone know if they’re related?
And my new favorite bag in the whole wide world. It’s HUGE (I can extend my entire arm down the bag). I like now having the option of carrying a change of shoes with me…especially once it starts getting icy out…heh. Oh and yes, I ALSO got the alligator Christopher Kane for TS tank top. The dress was….too long for me..and I think would be a waste to cut half the alligator off!
On an exciting note: I’m going to see Jigga when he comes to Vancouver. HOLA! I’ve heard from everyone’s that seen him that he’s fucking amazing.
Wearing second hand Nike letterman’s jacket, JBrand 10″ skinnies, Christopher Kane for TOPSHOP, Sam Edelman booties, Wilfred tank

I like the holes and tassels on that bag. Very unexpected, yet very intriguing.

Old school music is the bomb. Esp 90′s music!
I have a genetics exam tomorrow and my gfs and I were poring over this seasons shoes XD It just amazes me that you have a biochem degree and yet you love fashion so much. I wish I could enjoy fashion more but my biochem class has taken over my life. Is it right for me to say fml? *shrugs* i look up to you girl!!

I absolutely love the letterman jacket especially with reference to those Jay-Z lyrics, it brings back memories of back in the day. That Chanel silver sequined blazer sounds amazing. I love that Christopher Kane for TS crocodile shirt because of that raw, animalistic vibe that it gives off – can’t wait to see how you wear it!

Tokio Joe is sort of the little sister to Tokio 7–honestly, both places are great for hidden treasures! I scored a Hussein Chalayan top for only 30 bones at Joe and a really sick leather and mesh Gautier skirt for 150 at Tokio 7. . .ahhhhh PS LOVE the bucket bag

Colleen,
So jealous! I was kinda disappointed that I didn’t find anything super awesome at either of the Tokio’s, but at least I saw some pretty things! Thanks for the clarification…i suspected that they were somehow related…

Nicole,
Hahah….yeah I love this song. It brings back fond memories of grinding at high school dances. Who knew ‘gushy’ could sound…so provocative?

Donna,
As funny as it is…I kinda ‘fell’ into biochem. I think if I could turn back time, I’d have moved to NY straight outta highschool….but you live and learn! And for me…I got a wacky science degree…not too bad when you think of it
